Each year, Faculty Appointments and Advancement (FAA) facilitates meetings and workshops for faculty members who will be assuming the responsibilities of dean or department chair. These efforts are designed to provide information about critical policies and procedures and introduce new academic leaders to key administrative personnel at IUPUI.
Beyond working with new deans and chairs, FAA develops programs and resources for all academic administrators. These activities assist deans and chairs in developing the capabilities needed for effective leadership in the complex environment of higher education, particularly on an urban campus.
The various efforts to assist deans and chairs in meeting the demands of their roles also provide participants an opportunity to get to know and interact with others on campus who serve in similar capacities. Individual consultation on topics of interest or concern to deans and chairs also is available. For example, during this academic year our staff consulted with deans, chairs, and program directors to conduct needs assessment and training and provide advice on the development of new degree programs, academic policy issues, promotion and tenure, sabbatical and other academic leaves. In addition, we offer this list of print resources available at IUPUI that are related to serving as an academic dean and/or chair.
